My Original Matson Oil Painting! - Which Matson Did It?

This original 24" x 24" oil painting, signed "Matson" was given to me over ten years ago by my Dad, who was living in Sun City, Arizona. I don't know where he obtained it, but he and my stepmother were "down-sizing", and gave us three original oil paintings while Corky and I were there on a visit.

Although the colors were bright, I hung it in the loft area of my log home in Orchard Park, New York, and it made that casual area sparkle.

In 2003 I began to create art myself (which has taken over our home), so my lively Matson painting has been bubble-wrapped and stored on a closet shelf in our Brooksville, Florida home. Now we are now "downsizing", and have decided to sell it. I went on the internet to research the name "Matson".

(Closeup of Artist's Signature)
I have found several Matson's who are artists on the internet! Todd Matson does wonderful work... but could this have been an early painting? R.J. Matson is a cartoonist, but could this have been an early oil, done as a student? There are dozens of Matsons out there! So who painted this colorful painting? Here are some close-ups...

There might be a clue in how the canvas was stretched.... Here's a peek at the back....

Ok, I put it out there! If anyone knows which "Matson" painted this painting... I would love to know also!

Thank you for caring .... from the grateful Wild Old Lady who is having fun today in Florida!

I have an oil painting with a similar signature. it is much more abstract than yours, it was given to me by a friend whom "acquired" it recently. he felt i would enjoy it, and he was correct! I too would like to know who painted it!

I have a similar painting, and after a little bit of research I'm pretty sure it's Jan Matson. There are a lot of similarities in the signature.

I have a painting by the same artist!
Two owls on a branch leaning ear to ear. Painted in the same style.
Such a nice painting, and get this...I found it next to a dumpster.lol

I'm trying to research this "Matson" character as well. I'm not as impressed with my painting as I am with yours but the signature is identical. I may have a first name in the next few days, if I find out I'll help you out.

I found a painting at a yard sale with the same signature. It's of a lighthouse and it is beautiful...couldn't pass it up. I'm not convinced it's Jan Matson. I guess we are all on the search for the elusive Matson!

my mom has the same painting ecept there are 3 owls sitting on a branch same orange/yellow coloring ,exact signature. She told me she had it given to her as a gift from sears back in the early 70's..she also heard on the news that the artist died and you could buy his artwork at Sears years ago .

I will throw my hat into this arena because I too have a Matson. My signature is slightly different ("t" instead of capital "T") but the scene is identical. My colors are orange where yours are yellow. The frame and back look exactly the same. I got mine at a thrift store somewhere in Alabama, most likely Baldwin County on the coast. Did you ever find out any more info about the artist? Petty

Have you compared signatures with the painting's on Jan Matson's website? Here's the link http://www.janmatson.com/

try Meg Matson from Missouri

Wow, this is awesome; I too own a Matson oil painting with the exact same signature as yours. Mine is of two daisy like flowers with a butterfly flittering about. Even the paint strokes and overall theme of the painting is similar to yours. Mine came with an older mobile home that I purchased, so I really don't know who owned the painting to begin with. I would guesstimate the work was done in the late 70's early 80's from the looks of it. It's still on the wall in my home here in Alabama. As a matter of fact, I would sell it for the right price

My brother is Todd Matson in Valley Center, KS. He is an oil painter of mostly southwest landscapes (New Mexico and Southern Colorado). The Matson signature you have is not his.

We have a nautical oil painting with that exact signature and came across this question while trying to find the artist. If you've discovered him/her could you let us know? marysrestorations@yahoo.com

Hi,
I'm the Jan Matson artist from Australia. My signature is quite similar, but it is definitely not my work.
Good luck with the search.

Did you ever find out who painted this? Did you sell it or do you still have it? I have one by the same artist and I like yours, too, but still have no clue which Matson is responsible.

I am the Meg Matson artist from Missouri. Not my work either! Several Matson artists sign their names in similar styles. I frequently get asked about work that people are trying to price.

I also have a "Matson" painting for which I am extremely interested in identifying the author. The brush strokes and the signature seem quite similar. I uploaded a cell phone photo to my G+ account if anyone is interested.

Would like to get to the bottom of this mystery :)

Hi. We went to an estate sale here in Michigan and saw a similar painting but with 2 owls. We were wondering who the artist is as well, and came upon your blog. We found it very entertaining, as it seemed that either this Matson was a rather prolific painter or these were reproductions of the same painting, that could be purchased from Sears. We are going to go back to the estate sale and if the painting is still there, we will pick it up. This will be provide an enjoyable provenance for the painting. Thanks!

I am artist Meg Matson from Missouri. There are several of us " Matsons" who sign in similar ways. None of the mentioned pieces are mine however. Unfortunately I often get people who send me photos of paintings they purchased that they were told by the sellers I had done them and they were given my bios. But they were not my work.
All artists like to be credited for work they have done but not credited for work they didn't - especially if it is nothing like the work they are trying to promote.
Thank you all for doing your homework and trying to find the correct Matson. Wish you all luck and keep collecting origional Art.

Hello -- I too have a Matson painting.. it's a canvas painting 37 x 37, and it's a gorgeous mid century winter landscape painting of a cabin and pine trees, and bare trees with northern lights shining down -- the color scheme is brilliant teal/turquoise, with bold black pine trees, black/brown bare trees, small cabins with orange glow in the windows, and white snow -- it's very stunning and appears to almost glow with the brilliant colors.. I would love to know who this Matson artist is/was... this painting is very unusual.. signature is in right lower corner and has a bold lower case t in the signature... not sure what the significance was of a left or right hand signature or a Upper T or Lower T - very interesting! The Matson signature is very large and clear.

I have similar photo like your description In 37x37" on canvas with same exact signature on bottom right side in dark orange color paint.

Deep sunset in ocean background, 5 fishing boats, 5 seagulls in near center. 2 of the fishing boat in the center are largest, 2 on the left are smaller and 1 on far right side is the smallest.

I also like to know the name of the original artist.

Thanks!

Well I also own a "Matson" mine is a lake in the fall with geese flying in. Evidently no one has been able to identify the artist as of yet.....

I recently bought a beautiful painting of a single seagull at a thrift store in St Petersburg, FL with this signature. It's 36" x 36" and in a thin black and silver frame. I'm excited to find this page. I'd love to know more about the artist.

Hi, there from Texas. I too, have a 36X36 in. Matson (large T in the center) oil painting with the exact signature and the detail done with a pallet knife. As an artist myself, I recognize the style too, is all too similar to the samples shown. As some of the blogs read, my search is an attempt to know about the artist and to know it's possible worth before I sell it too. The theme is shrimp boats and seagulls silloutted against the sunrise or sunset. The colors are dark except for the orange horizon of course and white on the water and a lone white flying sea gull in the foreground.
If we keep this up, the search, we might just make this person more famous! Either way, his painting is competing for space in my house along with mine!I could access a price to it but would rather have concrete evidence as well.

Unknown said...

I also have a Matson/Matsun painting that i saved from an old house under 10 inches of dust. There are cracks in the paint so I assume its an original and not a print.

Its in golds blacks and browns much like yours. Sig in bottom left corner.

The image depicts a view of Seagrass and Seagulls moving out from the foreground to the background (7 to be exact) and a sailboat in the distance.

I have a painting by the artist with the T raised in the middle of the signature it is an abstract of a downhill skier it is beautiful I have a really nice frame on it the Kansas is in pristine condition the colors are bright and it's absolutely beautiful but I don't downhill ski I would like to sell it and I would like to find out who painted it can you help

Unknown said...

I have one with 2 ships and seagulls under a sunset.

I have one with the signature colors of yellows and browns for background with two colorful trees of pink and green on either side of a barn with the door opened and a figure in white against black. We have had debates over what is in the barn... an angel, two people dancing...it's quite intriguing. It is signed Matson with T. It's framed in yellow and I see how it might have been sold at Sears as a home decor item. Wish I knew more about it. I have nowhere in my house to hang it but just can't seem to let go either.

I, too have the 2 owls on a branch painting that sounds identical to another commenter. It was given to my sister by our aunt who lived in Boston, Mass. We don't know when or where she got it. The method in which it was framed ( back view shown) is identical to another posters picture. At first I thought mine was just a print of an original but then I felt it and some of the paint is raised and the manner in which it was framed didn't seem like a print....but how can there be two originals of an identical painting? Anyone have any thoughts on this?

The painting is currently on the Tacoma Goodwill online sales site (or one that looks exactly the same). Was this painting donated to the Tacoma Goodwill?

Did you ever figure out the artist? My painting looks just like yours!

I have a painting that has the Matson signature (with the capital ‘T’). Jan Matson of Australia kindly communicated with me and verified the painting was not hers. My painting was purchased at a local Habitat for Humanity thrift store in a small PA borough. I too wish I knew more about the artist. The painting is a landscape of a tree surrounded in white (clouds ?), with white balls of fluff within the green of the tree. There is a barn or house in the background with wooden prairie fence.

I believe the artist is my uncle Raymond Matson. He lived in Mpls and then later in Az. He also did art in sand. I would swear that is his signature.

Can I send you a picture of the painting with a close up of his signature Karen?

"Matson" is a name commonly signed to decorative paintings produced by Ri-Mat Enterprises and its subsidiary, Avante Studios. Founded by Richard Matsuura in 1962, the Ri-Mat and Avante lines were carried by Sears & Roebuck as well as other chain retailers. The paintings were produced by anonymous artists in an assembly line fashion. Matson is the most common name signed to those paintings, but many other names were also used by both companies. Matsuura passed away in 2012.
